About the Author:-
Rajsekhar Basu (1880–1960) was one of the most gifted Bengali writers. A scientist by training and a leader of the Bengali language reform movement, he is best known for his satirical short stories as the writer Parashuram. But his scope as a writer went far beyond humor. His contribution to Bengali prose consists not only of translations, essays, and renderings of epics such as the Mahabharata. He received the Padma Bhushan award in 1956 and is also responsible for bringing out the renowned Bengali dictionary Chalantika, which standardized Bengali orthography and lexicon.
When and Where the Book Was Written:-
Rajsekhar Basu composed his version of the Mahabharata in the early 20th century, when Bengal was experiencing a cultural and literary renaissance. This period witnessed an explosion in translating and reworking the ancient works for the contemporary Bengali reader. His Mahabharata was not a simple translation but a cultural reworking aimed at conveying the extensive Sanskrit epic in a form of Bengali that was accessible, fluent, and readable. The work was mostly done in Kolkata, the literary center of Bengal during the period.
Content of the Book:-
This abridgment is a shortened version of the original Mahabharata, retaining all its major events—right from the birth of Kauravas and Pandavas to the great Kurukshetra battle and beyond. Basu unfolds the intricate narrative in clear terms, bringing out the philosophical, ethical, and emotional aspects of the epic. Keeping the grandeur of the original intact, he skillfully sifts out unnecessary detail to reach the heart of the story. His clear writing and incisive perception render even the most complex episodes comprehensible and engaging to contemporary readers.
Summary of the Book:-
Rajsekhar Basu’s Mahabharata is a masterful abridgment that brings the gigantic Sanskrit epic into the reach of Bengali readers without diluting its essential substance. It is a tale of dynastic conflict, divine interventions, moral conflicts, and the eventual victory of dharma. The book is equally balanced between action and introspection so that the richness of characters such as Krishna, Arjuna, Bhishma, Draupadi, and Karna is never lost sight of. His rendition is both an introduction to new readers and a rejuvenating revisit to the old ones.
What the Admin Thinks About the Book:-
This rendition of the Mahabharata is one of the best examples of literary adaptation in Bengali literature. Rajsekhar Basu’s prose is beautiful, his narrative concise, and his voice totally reverent of the original work yet entirely captivating. This book is ideal for everyone interested in the epic but intimidated by its size or classical diction. It not only maintains the eternal quality of the Mahabharata but also imparts a distinctly Bengali flavor to it, rendering it in itself a cultural jewel.
