Nabarun Bhattacharya (June 23, 1948 – July 31, 2014), the only child of famous playwright-actor Bijan Bhattacharya and literary Mahasweta Devi, was born in Bahrampur in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. Nabarun Babu was an unconventional writer of Bengali literature. Poet, storyteller, and novelist, he was creating a genre of his own by mixing these three identities.
Nabarun’s novel ‘Herbert’ in 1993 caused a great stir in the reader society. He also received the Sahitya Akademi Award that year for this novel. He also received Narsingh Das (1994) and Bankim (1997) awards. Later, Sumon Mukherjee made a movie of the same name with this novel. Sumon also made two more films based on Nabarun’s writing ‘Mahanagar@Kolkata’ and ‘Kangal Malsat’.
In his poems, as well as in stories or novels, Nabarun paints a picture of human defeat, misery and the reasons for which man left the world. Why only human beings, plants or animals of this biology — those who are endangered wherever, Nabarun’s literature is for them.
