Shailajananda Mukhopadhyay (1901-1976) was a fiction writer, filmmaker. He was born on 21 March 1901 at Andal village in Burdwan district of West Bengal at his maternal uncle’s home. His ancestral home is in the village of Rupsipur in Birbhum. Started his education at Raniganj Searsol School. Kazi Nazrul Islam was his classmate there and the two were close friends.
Although Shailajananda entered the field of literature through composing poems, he later established himself as a novelist. He wrote many novels based on the lives of miners, Santals, and other lower caste working people. In this case, he played the role of a pioneer. He also wrote many stories about coal miners. The number of his books including novels and stories is about one and a half-hundred. Notable is- ‘Koylakutir Deshe’, ‘Doctor’, ‘Bandi’, ‘Aaj Shubhodin’, ‘Jhoro Howya’, ‘Matir Ghar’, ‘Banglar Meye’, ‘Joyar Bhata’, ‘Narimedh’, ‘Banbhasi’, ‘Rupang Dehi’, ‘Cranchomithun’, ‘Rupobati’, Patalpuri’, ‘Akash Kusum’, ‘Sara Raat’, etc.

Shailajananda was the editor of Kalikalam for a long time. Many of his novels have also been filmed. He was also a film-director himself. He won the Prafulla Kumar and Suresh Chandra Smriti Award (1959) for his contribution to literature and film.
