Niharranjan Gupta was an Indian Bengali writer and physician, especially known as a mystery story writer. This great writer is always remembered for his creation the famous detective character Kiriti Roy.

Niharranjan had dreamed of being a writer since his childhood. Once upon a time, he went to Santiniketan and received the blessings of Rabindranath Tagore and collect Tagore’s autograph. Niharranjan wrote his first novel ‘Rajkumar’ at the age of eighteen. While he staying in England, he became interested in writing a detective story and improve his own writing skill and meet with Agathie Christie. When he returned to India, he wrote his first detective novel- ‘Kalo Bhamor’. He added Kiriti Roy as a detective character in that story, which is a unique creation in Bengali Goyenda uponyas. Later, Kiriti Roy became hugely popular with Bengali readers. He was an incomparable writer for writing mystery stories in Bengali literature. About fifty-five novels of his have been filmed in Bengali and Hindi till now.
