Some words about Satidaha
Satidaho ritual – It is an ancient Hindu religious practice where a widow was burnt alive with her husband’s corpse. In Sanskrit, the word ‘Sati‘ literally means a sacred woman who exhibits ultimate honesty towards her husband and she is veracious to her relatives. But as a tradition, Satidaha means the religious obligation of voluntary burning of a widow with her dead husband, climbing the burning stage of her husband’s funeral in the midst of the crowd. It is not certain when and how such rituals have been developed in a religious manner. Greek author Diodorus (approx. 300 BC) describes a Satidaha incident. This description closely resembles the eighteenth-century Satidaho system.
However, at the end of the nineteenth century, the inhumane practices were abolished. The abolition of the Satidaha system was possible due to the spread of Western education, the promotion of Christian missionaries, the emergence of the educated middle class and the Hindu Reformist movement.
However, must read this book to get the full details of this cruel practice. This book is a historical document of the Satidaho tradition.
