Gajendra Kumar Mitra was born on 11 November 1908 and died on 16 October 1994. He was a prominent writer, translator, and as well as publisher in the world of Bengali literature. He was one of the successful writers who wrote on the Bengali middle-class society after Rabindranath, Sharatchandra, Bibhutibhushan, and Tarashankar.
His writing-field was very large and he was well versed in social novels, mythological novels, historical novels, short stories, and juvenile literature. Over the long sixty years of his literary life, he has published thousands of short stories and more than fifty novels. He has beautifully portrayed the diversity of the human mind and the ruthless yet realistic expression through every character which he created.
‘Kolkatar Kachhei’, ‘Upakanthe’, ‘Poush-Faguner Pala’ – this trilogy is considered as one of the best novels in modern Bengali literature. He has received the Sahitya Akademi Award (Kolkatar Kachhei) and the Rabindra Award (Poush-Faguner Pala) for his great contribution to literature.
