Jatrapala’s tradition is very ancient. There was a tradition of Palagan and Palaobhinoy in this country in the 8th and 9th centuries.
Even the appearance of Sri Chaitanyadev, the play of Palagan and KahiniKavya in the entire land including Rard, Banga, Samatat, Gaur, Pundra, Chandradwip, Harikel, Shreehatta were in vogue. The word “Jatra” comes from the traditional way of going from one place to another in religious or other festivals. There are Shiver Gajon, Ramjatra, Keshtojatra, Sitar Baromasi, Radhar Baromasi were common in this country. The various myths were played at this time. Origin of the “Jatra” from there.
Krishna Jatra became very popular after the advent of Sri Chaitanyadev at Navadwip. “Krishna Jatra” spread throughout the Bengal territory the eighteenth century (1700 AD). It is the life story of Lord Sri Krishna. The “Krishnajatra” was mainly used to present the audience with the acting and lyrics of Radha Krishna’s love story, Krishna’s childhood, Krishna sports with Mother Jashoda, Krishna kill Kangsa, Mathura Joy, etc. Visitors watched this Krishnajatra with devotion. Chaitanyadev used to play himself in a ‘Krishna Jatra’ named ‘Rukmini Haran’. He acted as Rukmini.
