For instance, “ভয়” creates suspense using a lonely setting of railway, dark surroundings and isolation together with an encounter that becomes increasingly more shocking. The story shows the writer’s skill in creating suspense and unease out of a usual ride.
Also, “নমস্কার” makes use of a distant setting of railway along with a usual fellow passenger to create suspense. Suspense is created in this story using conversation and observation instead of constant supernatural occurrence. Dark paths, deserted or lonely spots, train stations, rivers, forests, nocturnal travel and strange homes become the places where the reality seems to get disturbed time after time. The pictures in the book serve to support the atmosphere of traditional Bengali ghost stories, whereas the plot always remains realistic.
General Impressions
It will be unfair to consider Bhut Samagra just a horror novel; it is an anthology of supernatural tales linked with human beings. The ghosts depicted may scare, puzzle, help, chastise or keep being a mystery to us. Underneath each supernatural event is a story full of emotions such as love, grief, fear, remorse, isolation, social injustice and the unbreakable bond between human beings and their memories.
