There was a time in the beginning when the general readership of Bengal had no idea about Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay. The main reason for this may be his sudden appearance in Bengali literature. There was no preparation, no hint, just the illusion that ‘this writing cannot be without Rabindranath’ that he created. The Bengali reader did not get a chance to know for the first time who wrote this. … one day it was somewhat resolved.
Another major obstacle in this regard is his character. Mainly he was against self-promotion — in fact, self-concealment was the main feature of his nature. As such a large part of Shakespeare’s life has remained beyond the knowledge of his biographers, the autobiographers of Sharatchandra will have to feel this lack forever.
His nomadic life – it can be called his normal life, which is the life of the artist, we have not found any trace of this yet. It is not known if Sharatchandra himself ever discussed the matter with anyone.
