Indira Devi (1879-1922) was a Bengali novelist, story-writer, and poet. She was a resident of Kolkata and used the name Indira Devi for writing and her real name was Surupa. Sarojkumar Roychowdhury (1903-1972) was a writer and Journalist. While he was studying for BA at Baharampur College, he came in contact with Subhas Chandra Bose and Kiran Shankar Roy and was inspired by the homeland consciousness and participated in the non-cooperation movement in 1921. Saroj Kumar was the author of the Kallol era and began his literary career by writing in the Baikali magazine. Although he was an expert in journalism and essay writing, he became famous as a literary writer.
The number of books written by him is twenty-five. His trio novels like ‘Grihokapoti’, ‘Somlota’ and ‘Mayurakshi’ depict the real image of Vaishnavism. The other notable books are: ‘Bandhoni‘, ‘Panthonibas’, ‘Deho-Jamuna’, ‘Moner Gohone’, ‘Hansobolaka’, ‘Kaloghora’, ‘Nagori’, ‘Akash O Mitrika’, etc. Some of his novels have been made into films. In his retirement, he edited a monthly magazine called ‘Bartaman’.
