Jagadish Gupta started out as a poet but after he got a permanent seat in Bangla literature as a short story writer. And he was able to maintain distinct genre in the case of writing stories and novels. Many readers call him the father of Bengali short story. His short stories have become rich in the deep sense of life, well-shaped Story format, proficient of characterization.
This renowned author was born on 22 Ashar, 1292 BS (June 1886) in Amlapara of Kushtia district. He passed the matriculation examination from Kolkata City Collegiate School in 1905. Henceforth, he was admitted to Calcutta Ripon College. And left the college complated F.A degree in 1907. He worked as a typist at Visva Bharati University.
Notable works are- Storybook: ‘Binodini’ (1334), ‘Ruper Bahire’ (1336), ‘Srimati’ (1337), ‘Udoylekha’ (1339), ‘Shashanka Kabirajer Stri’ (1341), ‘Meghabrita Ashani’ (1354) etc. Novels: ‘Asadhu Siddhatha’ (1336), ‘Laghuguru’ (1338), ‘Dulaler Dola’ (1338), ‘Kalonkita Tirtha’ (1367) etc. Poetry compilation: ‘Akhsara’.
