A fair and religious gathering is held every year on the occasion of Makarsangranti at Kapilmuni’s Ashram on the southern tip of Sagar Island in West Bengal, it is also known as the Gangasagar mela. This place is called Gangasagar because of the confluence of the Ganges (Hughli river) and the Bay of Bengal. This beautiful place is a pilgrimage site on one side and a fair ground on the other, these two have been combined in Gangasagar-Mela. And it is known as the second largest Hindu fair in India after Kumbh Mela.
Jyotirmoy Ghosh Dastidar, better known as Shanku Maharaj, wrote a remarkable travel story about the Gangasagar, the second largest fair and the holy pilgrimage of the Hindus. This writer has enriched the travel literature of Bengali with his impeccable writings. He has written more than 40 travelogues in his literary life. He wrote fifteen travel stories about the Himalayas.
