Lila (Leela) Majumdar, is an ageless children’s literature authoress. He adorned the literature of adolescents with priceless gems.
This eminent authoress was born in Kolkata’s Rai family on February 26, 1908. The father’s name was Pramadarajan Roy and the mother’s name is Surma Devi. There were other prominent personalities in her family- Renowned teenager author- Upendra Kishor Raychaudhuri was her uncle, another renowned child, and teenager writer- Sukumar Roy was her cousin brother. And the renowned filmmaker Satyajit Roy was her nephew.
The author’s childhood was spent in Shillong. Here she studied at the Loreto Convent up to 1919. When her father moved to Calcutta in 1919, then she attended St. John’s Diocesan School and from here in 1924, she secured the second place inside the girls and passed the matriculation. She then passed BA Honors and MA in English from Calcutta University. Note that she took first place in both examines. She obtained the highest number in the English examination of Calcutta University.
After that, she joined Maharani Balika Bidyalay in Darjeeling as a teacher. And then she went to Santiniketan at Rabindranath’s request.
Basically most of her time is spent in writing. Her first story ‘Lakshmichhara’ was published in the magazine Sandesh in 1922. Her literary life is about eight decades.
