The book is an outstanding memoir of the early twentieth century in Bengali literature written by Pramdaranjan Roy. He was the brother of Satyajit Ray’s grandfather Upendrakishore Roy Chowdhury and the father of literary Leela Majumder.
The book describes all the thrilling experiences of his surveyor life during the survey period from 1899 to 1920 in the forests and deserts. During these 22 years, he had to carry out British official survey work in the remote China Shan Hills Lusai or Jayantia Mountains, in the Shan Kingdom, or in the Kenting Forest, in the Bannu and Torchi valleys. These were places in those days where even 300-400 square miles were uninhabited.
