Pramothnath Basu (1855-1934) was a geologist, scientist, social worker and writer. He was born On 12 May 1855 at Gaopur, in the 24-Parganas district of West Bengal. In 1872, he passed the Entrance examination and passed the FA in 1873 from Krishnanagar College and admitted to St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. While studying in this college, he received a Gilchrist scholarship in 1874 and went to England. And in 1878, he received a BSc degree from London University. The next year he passed the Royal School of Mines examination and returned home.
In 1880 Pramathnath got the highest position in the ‘Geological Survey of India’. But in 1903, he resigned as a special reason. At the time of the job in the geological organization, he conducted mineral surveys in different regions of Madhya Pradesh. His notable achievements are Dulli and Rajahara Iron mine discovery and as a result, the villain factory was established. Pramathanath’s best works are the discovery of Jamshedpur Iron mine (1903-4). On the basis of this mine, the famous Tata-Company agreed to set up the iron-steel plant. He also conducted exploration of coal in Raniganj, Darjeeling and Assam, copper in Sikkim, mineral in Myanmar.
Pramathnath Basu was determined about patriotism. He worked as the Secretary of the India Society in London for the development of science and industrial education in India. And tried to spread science consciousness in Bengal. This prominent person wrote many books and essays and all these books content are education, culture and Hindu civilization.
