This book contains two more stories besides a popular Bengali novel ‘Rudali’ written by Mahasweta Devi, these are- ‘Tung-Kur’ and ‘Gohumani’.
What is the meaning of the word ‘Rudali’? The meaning of this word is that they are hired women for money. They have to go to the dead-house and cry. Gets money in return. These women are mainly from the lower castes of Rajasthan. This tradition of crying is part of the culture of Rajasthan. This novel of Mahasweta Devi is about their life story.




The second story is ‘Tung-Kur’. The word is from Jharkhand. At harvest time, some stalks of paddy fall to the ground due to the impact of the scythe, these called ‘Tung’. And ‘Kur’ means pile.

And third story is ‘Gohumani’ this means a cobra.

The author- Mahasweta Devi is a prominent literary and human rights activist. She is famous for her work and writings on other tribes, including Santal. ‘Hajar Churashir Maa” is one of the hundreds of books written by her. She received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1996, the Padma Vibhushan Award in 2006, the Jnanpith Award, and the SAARC Literary Award in 2006 for her contribution to literature.
